[17권 1호] The impact of ESG performance on TFP the role of government subsidies and industrial policies
We analyzed the impact mechanism and heterogeneous impact of corporate environment,
society, and governance (ESG) performance on total factor productivity (TFP) using data
from China’s A-share listed companies from 2009 to 2021. And further emphasized the
important role of the government (through government subsidies and industrial policies) in
this process. We discovered that the increase in corporate ESG performance significantly
promoted TFP growth. In addition, ESG can promote TFP growth by increasing government
subsidies and easing financing constraints. Second, the promoting effect of ESG on the
TFP of companies with low TFP levels continues to increase, while that of companies with
high TFP levels continues to decline. Third, the promoting effect of ESG on TFP is more
significant in state-owned enterprises than in non-state-owned enterprises. In addition, ESG
can promote TFP growth in various factor-intensive enterprise types. Fourth, active
industrial policies can expand the role of ESG in promoting TFP. Our findings complement
research on the impact of ESG on TFP and provide evidence that ESG strategies are
beneficial to enhancing the core competitiveness of enterprises. This article provides
valuable insights for Chinese companies, investors, and policymakers and a valuable
reference for ESG practices in other emerging countries.
본 연구는 2009년부터 2021년까지 중국 A주 상장기업의 데이터를 이용하여 환경, 기업의 사
회적 책임, 지배구조(ESG) 성과가 총요소생산성(TFP)에 미치는 영향과 이질성 분석을 실행
하였다. 이 과정에서 정부 보조금과 산업 정책을 통해 정부의 역할이 얼마나 중요한가에 대
한 점을 심층적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 기업의 ESG 성과의 증가가 TFP 성장을 유의미
하게 촉진한 것으로 나타났습니다. 또한 ESG성과는 정부 보조금을 늘리고 자금 조달 제약
을 완화하여 TFP 성장을 촉진함을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, ESG가 TFP에 미치는 촉진 효과는
TFP 수준이 낮은 기업의 TFP는 계속 증가하는 반면, TFP 수준이 높은 기업의 TFP는 계속
감소하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, ESG가 TFP 향상에 미치는 효과는 비국유기업보다 국
유기업에서 더 두드러진 결과를 나타내고 있다. 또한 ESG는 다양한 요인 집약적 기업에서
TFP 성장을 촉진하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 넷째, 적극적인 산업정책에 따라 ESG성과가
TFP 향상에 큰 역할을 하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 ESG가 TFP에 미치는
영향에 대한 연구를 보완하고 ESG 전략이 기업의 핵심 경쟁력 향상에 도움이 된다는 증거
를 제공한다. 이러한 연구 결과는 중국 기업, 투자자 및 정책 입안자에게 귀중한 통찰력을
제공하고 다른 신흥시장 국가의 ESG 관행에 대한 귀중한 참고 자료를 제공하게 될 것이다.
